Stale Book Review #2 - First Counsel

The First Counsel by Brad Meltzer
Cost: $0.75US
Page Count: 509

Another from the "Big Spender" category.  Since its inception, I have been a big fan of Decoded, the Meltzer vehicle on the History Channel.  It's a good show and delves into the world of conspiracies and all that shit.  I like it.

Anyway, The First Counsel is a pretty quick read that won't leave you feeling like you've just devoured a Stephanie Meyer novel (those are terrible).  The story is pretty simple, I guess.  Nora, the President of the US's daughter, is a complete twat that uses people and, generally, gets her own way even though she is vilified by the press.  Michael, the protagonist and low level White House do-boy, falls for her charms and apparent hotness.  Then they get caught up in some mystery-type bullshit that involves high level White House officials and such.

The real story, to me, is between Michael and his friends.  They are all Washington beltwayers that have their own agendas but seem pretty supportive of their big shot friend.  The relationship with Nora puts a big strain on all of them and eventually leaves one of them dead.  But, in the end, they pull out the final shenanigans and save the day.  If this guy Michael were my friend I would've just washed my hands of his self-indulgence and high and mighty attitude.  This protagonist isn't what I would exactly call likeable.

Decent book, great price, quick read...what more can you ask for?
